April 24, 2026 — Despite significant progress in combating malaria, Nigeria continues to face a major stumbling block: the proliferation of substandard and falsified antimalarial medicines. These illicit drugs not only lead to treatment failures and prolonged illness but also contribute to the growing threat of drug-resistant malaria strains.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently intensified crackdowns on fake drug syndicates. However, health advocates stress that a more holistic approach involving stricter supply chain monitoring, enhanced local pharmaceutical production, and robust public awareness campaigns is essential to completely eradicate fake antimalarials from the market.
